F%5C%2Fuwspace.uwaterloo.ca%5C%2Fbitstream%5C%2Fhandle%5C%2F10012%5C%2F11275%5C%2FLawson_Matthew.pdf%3Fsequence%3D5%26amp%3BisAllowed%3Dy%26%23039%3B%26gt%3BCollective%20Form%3A%20Infill%20housing%20and%20new%20domestic%20spaces%20in%20Toronto%26%23039%3Bs%20residential%20neighbourhoods%26lt%3B%5C%2Fa%26gt%3B%26lt%3B%5C%2Fi%26gt%3B%20%5BUniversity%20of%20Waterloo%5D.%20%26lt%3B%5C%2Fdiv%26gt%3B%5Cn%26lt%3B%5C%2Fdiv%26gt%3B%22%2C%22data%22%3A%7B%22itemType%22%3A%22thesis%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Collective%20Form%3A%20Infill%20housing%20and%20new%20domestic%20spaces%20in%20Toronto%27s%20residential%20neighbourhoods%22%2C%22creators%22%3A%5B%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Matthew%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Lawson%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22Toronto%20is%20facing%20a%20housing%20crisis%2C%20the%20symptoms%20of%20which%20are%20apparent%20across%20the%20city%3B%20property%20values%20are%20increasing%20at%20a%20dizzying%20rate%2C%20rental%20vacancy%20rates%20are%20at%20historic%20lows%2C%20poverty%20and%20displacement%20are%20being%20made%20more%20visible%20by%20waves%20of%20gentrification.%20And%20yet%2C%20Toronto%20is%20undergoing%20a%20boom%20of%20residential%20construction%2C%20with%20high%20rise%20condominiums%20changing%20the%20fabric%20of%20large%20parts%20of%20the%20city.%20Housing%20in%20this%20climate%20is%20conceived%20as%20a%20speculative%20commodity%2C%20rather%20than%20as%20a%20space%20of%20dwelling%3B%20this%20is%20a%20crisis%20not%20only%20of%20affordability%20and%20access%20to%20housing%2C%20but%20also%20the%20quality%20of%20domestic%20space.%20This%20condition%20is%20not%20simply%20an%20issue%20of%20the%20current%20supply%20of%20housing%2C%20but%20inherent%20to%20its%20production%20and%20form.%20The%20thesis%20proposes%20an%20alternative%20to%20the%20contemporary%20production%20of%20housing%2C%20as%20a%20critical%20response%20to%20the%20housing%20crisis%20and%20contemporary%20domestic%20space.%20The%20historical%20evolution%20of%20residential%20typologies%20in%20the%20city%20makes%20legible%20policy%20and%20planning%20tools%20as%20well%20as%20socio-economic%20tendencies.%20The%20initial%20subdivision%20of%20large%20scale%20properties%20in%20the%20early%20city%20into%20individual%20residential%20lots%20and%20accompanying%20commodification%20of%20property%20led%20to%20the%20large-scale%20production%20of%20semi%20and%20detached%20single%20family%20homes%20as%20the%20dominant%20historic%20type%20in%20the%20city%2C%20creating%20a%20perceived%20image%20of%20Toronto%20as%20a%20%5Cu2018City%20of%20Homes%5Cu2019%20that%20persists%20into%20the%20present.%20Post%20war%20development%20expanded%20this%20production%20of%20single%20family%20homes%20to%20the%20suburbs%2C%20while%20displacing%20substantial%20urban%20communities%20through%20Urban%20Renewal%20schemes%20and%20the%20construction%20of%20high%20rise%20towers.%20While%20larger%20social%20and%20economic%20institutions%20have%20undergone%20rapid%20changes%20characterised%20by%20the%20current%20tendency%20towards%20neoliberalization%2C%20domestic%20space%20is%20still%20structured%20around%20the%20institution%20of%20the%20nuclear%20family%2C%20and%20the%20type%20of%20the%20single-family%20home.%20The%20thesis%20positions%20itself%20in%20the%20tradition%20of%20urban%20analysis%20and%20infill%20typologies%20proposed%20by%20architects%20like%20Diamond%20and%20Myers%20and%20George%20Baird%2C%20and%20associated%20reform%20planning%20movements%20that%20emerged%20in%20response%20to%20these%20patterns%20in%20the%201970%5Cu2019s%2C%20while%20imagining%20the%20possibilities%20of%20new%20domestic%20spaces%20that%20reflect%20contemporary%20living%20conditions.%20%5Cn%5CnBuilding%20upon%20this%20precedent%20of%20infill%20housing%2C%20the%20proposal%20contextualizes%20low-rise%20high%20density%20development%20within%20Toronto%5Cu2019s%20residential%20Neighbourhoods%3B%20large%20geographic%20areas%20of%20single%20family%20homes%20currently%20protected%20from%20any%20densification.%20The%20design%20proposal%20acts%20as%20a%20synthesis%20to%20these%20ideas%20about%20the%20form%20of%20contemporary%20domestic%20space%20and%20the%20contextual%20nature%20of%20infill%2C%20creating%20increased%20density%20for%20reasons%20of%20affordability%20for%20residents%2C%20but%20also%20to%20respond%20to%20both%20social%20and%20ecological%20sustainability%20made%20possible%20by%20increased%20density%20and%20more%20efficient%20land%20use.%20The%20logic%20of%20the%20building%20form%20is%20contextually%20responsive%2C%20establishing%20a%20series%20of%20setbacks%20based%20on%20the%20existing%20structure%20of%20the%20neighbourhoods%2C%20as%20well%20as%20manipulating%20the%20forms%20based%20on%20subtractive%20planes.%20A%20resident%20led%20development%20model%20is%20proposed%20to%20resist%20the%20commodification%20of%20housing%2C%20while%20creating%20spaces%20that%20are%20more%20suitable%20for%20a%20diverse%20range%20of%20contemporary%20domestic%20realities%20with%20r
