the%20Haussmannization%20of%20inner-city%20Toronto.%20Vigorous%20community%20opposition%20to%20urban%20renewal%2C%20though%20only%20successful%20in%20the%20late%201960s%20was%20by%20no%20means%20a%20recent%20development%20in%20Toronto.%20Second%2C%20the%20thesis%20places%20the%20local%20politics%20of%20slum%20clearance%20and%20urban%20renewal%20schemes%20within%20the%20context%20of%20Toronto%26%23039%3Bs%20chronic%20low-income%20housing%20shortage%20which%20conditioned%20how%20these%20programs%20played%20out%20and%20how%20Torontonians%20reacted%20to%20them%20in%20the%20ways%20they%20did.%20Third%2C%20and%20finally%2C%20it%20is%20a%20central%20contention%20of%20this%20thesis%20that%20the%20destruction%20of%20inner%20city%20neighbourhoods%20under%20the%20guise%20of%20renewal%20was%20due%2C%20in%20large%20part%2C%20to%20the%20way%20in%20which%20these%20neighborhoods%20were%20portrayed%20m%20popular%20discourse.%5Cn%5CnThus%2C%20the%20thesis%20examines%20the%20idea%20of%20community%20as%20%26quot%3Bcontested%20terrain%26quot%3B%20in%20two%20different%20ways%20-%20physical%20and%20ideological.%20The%20battle%20for%20control%20over%20the%20renewal%20of%20Toronto%26%23039%3Bs%20inner-city%20neighbourhoods%20concerned%20real%20spatial%20sites%2C%20the%20conditions%20of%20many%20of%20which%20were%20had%20to%20the%20physical%20and%20material%20interests%20of%20their%20residents.%20As%20a%20result%2C%20planners%2C%20politicians%2C%20and%20residents%20of%20inner-city%20Toronto%20neighbourhoods%20struggled%20daily%20to%20prevent%20further%20decay%20of%20individual%20and%20collective%20residential%20environments.%20Nonetheless%2C%20the%20primary%20battle%20waged%20over%20the%20control%20of%20inner-city%20neighbourhoods%20was%20ideological.%20Planners%2C%20politicians%2C%20social%20housing%20activists%2C%20the%20popular%20media%2C%20community%20activists%2C%20and%20her-city%20residents%20all%20struggled%20over%20the%20definition%20of%20inner-city%20neighbourhoods%20as%20%26quot%3Bslums.%26quot%3B%20AU%20too%20often%20Toronto%26%23039%3Bs%20working%20class%20neighbourhoods%20were%20viewed%20through%20the%20lens%20of%20the%20%26quot%3BVictorian%20slum%26quot%3B%20and%20universally%20portrayed%20as%20landscapes%20of%20disease%2C%20despair%2C%20and%20degeneracy%20-%20both%20physically%20and%20morally.%20The%20inability%20of%20Torontonians%20to%20move%20beyond%20a%20kind%20of%20%26quot%3BVictorian%20environmentalism%26quot%3B%20to%20comprehend%20the%20diverse%20realities%20of%20inner-city%20neighbourhoods%20led%20to%20the%20physical%20and%20social%20destruction%20of%20much%20of%20working-class%20Toronto.%20Ironically%2C%20wiping%20these%20cancerous%20blots%26quot%3B%20from%20the%20face%20of%20the%20city%20through%20massive%20urban%20renewal%20and%20public%20housing%20projects%20was%20the%20most%20costly%20solution%20of%20all%20and%20undermined%20the%20nation%26%23039%3Bs%20entire%20urban%20housing%20program.%20Indeed%2C%20the%20fundamental%20contradictions%20between%20the%20discourse%20and%20the%20reality%20of%20poor%20housing%20districts%20were%20vital%20to%20the%20struggle%20of%20political%20hegemonies%20that%20eventually%20brought%20slum%20clearance%20and%20urban%20renewal%20schemes%20to%20a%20halt%20by%201970.%22%2C%22thesisType%22%3A%22%22%2C%22university%22%3A%22Queen%27s%20University%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222001%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22email%20me%20for%20how%20to%20obtain%20a%20copy%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22C3WCVASC%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222020-11-17T16%3A57%3A08Z%22%2C%22tags%22%3A%5B%7B%22tag%22%3A%22Canada%22%7D%2C%7B%22tag%22%3A%22Regent%20Park%20%28original%29%22%7D%2C%7B%22tag%22%3A%22Toronto%22%7D%2C%7B%22tag%22%3A%22dissertation%5C%2Fthesis%22%7D%2C%7B%22tag%22%3A%22public%20housing%22%7D%2C%7B%22tag%22%3A%22public%20housing%20-%20Canada%22%7D%2C%7B%22tag%22%3A%22slum%20clearance%22%7D%2C%7B%22tag%22%3A%22urban%20renewal%22%7D%5D%7D%7D%5D%7D
